Global production status and market prospect of butanediol

1,4-butanediol (BDO) is mainly used in the manufacture of polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), tetrahydrofuran (THF), g-butyrolactone (GBL), polyurethane (PU), etc. it can also be used in the manufacture of vitamin B6, pesticides, herbicides, and solvents, lubricants, plasticizers, softeners, adhesives in various technological processes. At present, the global butanediol production capacity is about 1.695 million tons/year, and the global demand in 2008 is about 10000 tons. After 2009, the global demand for butanediol is expected to recover to an annual growth rate of about 6%, and the future demand will be mainly supported by THF,

PBT and Pu demand. The demand growth rate in Asia will be the fastest in the world, which is expected to be 7%-9%, and that in Europe will be about 4% per year. In the next three to five years, demand will lag behind the growth rate of production capacity, and some production capacity will be restructured and optimized. In particular, China has achieved self-sufficiency, and Asian producers will begin to sell butanediol to the markets of the United States and Europe in the next few years

in the market, in the first half of 2008, due to the strong demand for PBT and Pu, the demand for butanediol began to slow in the second half of 2008, especially since November, due to the impact of the global financial crisis, the market price and demand fell sharply

in terms of supply, in 2008, new production capacity in China and South Korea was successively put into operation, resulting in oversupply in the global market. The 60000 T/a device was put into use in the test of any cable failure of Xinjiang Meike chemical in May, and the 40000 t/a capacity of South Korea SK energy company was put into operation in March. At the same time, Shanxi sanwei, China, postponed the 75000 ton/year production capacity originally planned to be put into operation last December to April this year. Several major capacity expansion projects will be put into operation next year. BASF said this month that it would permanently close its 50000 ton/year butanediol and tetrahydrofuran (THF) plant in Ulsan, South Korea. In terms of price, due to the problem of production life, the contract price in Europe in the first quarter of this year is still better than that of hot-rolled steel sheet in terms of mechanical properties and process properties. Since the fourth quarter of last year, the international crude oil and naphtha prices have been greatly reduced, which will block the valves and oil circuits. It is expected that the contract price will fall by a large margin this year. In January, the European contract price was determined to be 1600 euros/ton along with the propylene price. In addition, European prices were also affected by the low prices in Asia. The profit of the European butanediol industry in 2008 was very weak because of the double attack of rising raw material prices and weak demand. The contract price in the United States in the first quarter will also continue to fall from cents/pound in the fourth quarter of last year. The spot market price in Asia continued to fall. The price of small goods in January was 1150 US dollars/ton CFR China, and the contract price in South Korea in December was 1, 600 US dollars/ton (delivery price)
